What Is An Ear Infection?

What Is An Ear Infection?

An ear infection involves inflammation or infection affecting part of the ear. Two common types are otitis externa, affecting the outer ear canal, and otitis media, affecting the middle ear behind the eardrum.

Ear infections may be short-lived, but some people experience persistent symptoms or repeated episodes that warrant further assessment. Treatment depends on which part of the ear is affected, the likely cause, the severity of symptoms and individual circumstances.

For further patient information, see Guy's and St Thomas' NHS Foundation Trust guidance on otitis externa.

Common Symptoms Of Ear Infections

Common Symptoms Of Ear Infections

Symptoms vary according to the type of ear infection and may include:

  • Ear pain or discomfort

  • Discharge or fluid from the ear

  • Itching or irritation of the ear canal

  • A feeling of pressure or fullness

  • Temporary changes in hearing

  • Swelling or inflammation around the ear canal

These symptoms can have several possible causes, so an examination is important when symptoms are persistent, severe or recurring.

Possible Causes Of Ear Infections

Possible Causes Of Ear Infections

Middle ear infections can be associated with viral or bacterial infection. Outer ear infections may develop when the skin of the ear canal becomes irritated, inflamed or infected.

Factors that can contribute to outer ear problems include water entering the ear, damage from inserting objects such as cotton buds, and skin conditions affecting the ear canal.

Recurring symptoms do not necessarily have the same cause each time, which is why specialist assessment may be useful.

When To Seek Medical Advice

When To Seek Medical Advice

Seek medical advice if ear symptoms are severe, worsening, persistent or repeatedly returning, particularly if you have discharge or noticeable hearing changes.

Urgent medical assessment may be required if you become very unwell or develop signs of a more serious complication. If you are unsure how urgently you need help, contact NHS 111 or your GP.

How We Help With Ear Infections

How We Help With Ear Infections

Our approach begins by establishing what is causing your ear symptoms, rather than assuming every painful or blocked ear requires the same treatment.

Dr Eirini Lentari can take a detailed history and examine the ear to assess for infection, inflammation, wax, eardrum problems and other possible causes.

Where clinically appropriate, an ear swab may also be taken for culture and sensitivity testing. This can help identify the microorganism associated with the infection and guide the most suitable treatment.

Depending on the findings, management may include appropriate medication, professional cleaning of the ear canal or further investigation. Hearing tests such as audiometry or tympanometry may also be recommended where relevant.

Importantly, antibiotics are not automatically required for every ear infection. NICE advises that many cases of acute middle ear infection in children improve without antibiotics. Treatment therefore needs to reflect the individual diagnosis and clinical circumstances.

Important Considerations And Urgent Symptoms

Important Considerations And Urgent Symptoms

Not every ear problem is caused by an infection, and treatment cannot be recommended accurately without appropriate assessment.

Some ear infections resolve without specialist intervention. Others may require treatment or further investigation, particularly when they recur or do not respond as expected.

Severe symptoms or signs of complications may require urgent or emergency care rather than a routine private appointment. Seek urgent medical advice if you are significantly unwell or concerned about rapidly worsening symptoms.
